Acorn had already delivered a similar direct-drive laser printing solution to Olivetti by the time of the planned announcement, with the intention of incorporating the solution into Olivetti's ETV range. A package containing the PC, printer card, a fax card and scanner was "expected to cost about £4000", and was set to be announced at the Personal Computer Show in September 1988 as "the launchpad for an ambitious office system". Īnother hardware product that was planned but not apparently realised in its original form was a laser printer card for IBM PC-compatible machines, employing Acorn's ARM chipset and Computer Concepts' own PostScript clone. With the introduction of RISC OS and the elimination of many of the concerns about the earlier Arthur operating system, the company announced support in their applications for both Impulse and RISC OS, but ended up only releasing RISC OS versions of applications such as Impression. Ĭomputer Concepts had been developing its own operating system, Impulse, along with a hardware product (originally named Equinox) consisting of two IBM PC-compatible expansion cards providing Acorn's ARM-based chipset that would "take over processing from the host PC" and run the Impulse operating system, although the company had also stated an intention to make Impulse available for the Archimedes and thereby support its own applications running on Acorn's own hardware. Since the Computer Concepts name was not suitable for international use, the Xara name had been adopted to market PC-based products. Once again in its history, Computer Concepts insisted that it was not abandoning the Acorn market, noting the introduction of various product upgrades and peripherals for the Acorn machines, while promoting Xara Studio – "really like an ArtWorks Version 2" – to users of the Risc PC with PC processor card. By the mid-1990s, the company had determined that the size of the Acorn market was not large enough to provide the revenues needed to invest in developing "the best new programs", and that the tools available for Windows (C++ compilers and class libraries) facilitating development of such new products were not likely to become available for the RISC OS platform, despite the company encouraging Acorn and others to provide them. This word processor would eventually be released as Impression.ĪrtWorks, the predecessor to Xara Xtreme, was released on the Archimedes, having been announced early in the life of the machine as an "object-orientated drawing package, similar to MacDraw in many respects". Various existing BBC Micro products were to be offered to run under emulation on the Archimedes, but the principal new product was to be a "WYSIWYG wordprocessor which makes full use of the RISC windowing environment". In 1986, Computer Concepts released its first piece of software for the Atari ST, Fast ASM, but the company's development focus returned to the Acorn platform when the Acorn Archimedes was released in 1987, pledging "almost exclusively ARM-related" development and indicating that software developed for the Archimedes would not merely be conversions of ST-based software already in progress. Support was set to continue for the company's BBC Micro products, however, and despite showing the Atari ST at the Acorn User Exhibition in 1986, the company introduced new products for the BBC Micro: the Inter-Base and Inter-Word office suite products. iXara Ltd started to explore cloud developments, and since 2016 both companies have been subsidiaries of Xara GmbH.Ītari ST and Acorn Archimedes development ĭissatisfied with the evolution of Acorn's product range, having "stretched the BBC micro beyond the limit", Computer Concepts announced in late 1985 that the company would concentrate on development for the Atari ST, noting that its need for software was similar to that of the early days of the BBC Micro. the company name was changed to Xara, Ltd., in 1995, and later to The Xara Group, Ltd. It was originally called Computer Concepts, Ltd. It started by developing for various 8-bit systems, such as the Acorn Atom and BBC Micro. The company was founded in 1981 by Charles Moir. It has developed software for a variety of computer platforms, in chronological order: the Acorn Atom, BBC Micro, Z88, Atari ST, Acorn Archimedes, Microsoft Windows, Linux, and more recently web browser-based services. Xara is an international software company founded in 1981, with an HQ in Berlin and development office in Hemel Hempstead, UK.

If you’re ready to incorporate phonics into sight word instruction, you’ll need a simple lesson plan that you can use again and again. You can probably modify sight word activities you already do to bring a focus to challenging patterns. The pictures below show ways to draw students’ attention to the parts of the word they may need to memorize. This helps them see where to concentrate their memorization energy. Learn sight words becomes more efficient when we help students differentiate the simple from the challenging letter patterns. All of the sight words should eventually be memorized for fluent reading.įortunately, typically developing readers can commit words to memory after one to four repetitions of sounding them out (Reitsma, 1983). We don’t want them to stop and sound these words out every time.” You might be thinking, “Wait! Sight words are supposed to be memorized so students can read them quickly. Only the words that are not decodable at all will have to be learned solely through memorization. Simple Fry words can be learned through phonics (or sounding-out).įor mixed simple/challenging pattern words, point out the patterns that must be memorized and use phonics to decode the rest. There are just a few Fry words that are made of only challenging patterns and must be learned through rote memorization. Most of the Fry words have at least some simple patterns that can be sounded out. Words can have all simple patterns, all challenging patterns, or a mix of simple/challenging. unfamiliar – a phonics pattern the student hasn’t learned yet.inconsistent – the pattern has more than one sound it can make (like ow in “ cow” or “ snow“).irregular – they don’t make the expected sound (like the ai in “ said”). These are words like “just,”man”, or “set.”Ĭhallenging patterns are not easy to sound out. Simple letter patterns make their expected sounds. Instead of teaching all sight words through memorization, a better approach is to integrate phonics when possible (2014, Ehri).Īll words are made up of letters and letter patterns that are either simple or challenging. (see orthographic mapping).įry’s process of looking at a word, being told what it says and memorizing it steps around the sounding out (or orthographic mapping) process. Going through this “sounding out” process helps kids to store the word in their memory for future reading. We know that kids learn new words by turning letters into sounds and then blending the sounds into words. Unfortunately, this technique is not effective for many children. Teachers followed this advice for many years. Kids would look at the words, be told what they said, and remember them. The Traditional Method of Learning Sight Words –įry felt that the sight words should be learned through rote memorization. That means teachers must know how to teach sight words effectively. (McArthur et al., 2015)Ĭlearly, skill with sight words is important. So, effective sight word instruction leads to better reading comprehension. When kids read fluently, they have an easier time comprehending what they read. When kids can read a lot of the most common words, they are able to read text more fluently. The first 100 words make up about half of all written material, and the first 300 words account for about 65% of all written material. The first 25 Fry words make up about a third of all written material. You’ll also hear them called “sight words” and “high-frequency words.” Fry called the words on his list “instant words” because kids should learn to recognize them quickly. Edward Fry developed a list of the most commonly used words in reading materials for grades 3-9. With limited time to teach reading, it makes sense to focus on teaching words students will encounter frequently.ĭr. Perfect for teachers working with the Fry words. As a second referee, it is critical not to repeat the signal for a ball that does not cross the net during the serving game. Touching the net’s top, palm facing it, with the hand on the side of the team that committed the error assists in this signal. When a four-hit violation is detected, the referee uses the touch signal and calls a foul. The four hit violation, in which a team hits the ball more than three times before returning it to the court, is one of the most common violations in volleyball. Understanding The Four Hits Violation In Volleyball The referee raises his four fingers and spreads open his fingers to signal that a team has hit the ball four times before returning it. It is critical that players strictly adhere to the rules and avoid engaging in double contact. During a volleyball game, double-handed contact is extremely common, and the outcome of the game can be altered significantly. The ball is considered double hit if it touches the body more than once in succession, as is the ball, unless played off a hard-driven spiked ball or blocked and played again by the blocker. The referee raises both hands, spreading open above his or her head, to signal a double hit violation. Double hits are the result of such contact, and they are illegal in volleyball. It is defined as a player hitting the ball twice within a row, not counting off a block. When a player commits a double contact foul, the double hit hand signal is used to signal the foul. Double Hit Foul: Be Aware Of The Rules In Volleyball It is important to be familiar with the hand signal to ensure that the game is fair for all players. Having the correct hand signal to indicate double contact can help referees make the correct call. Double contact is illegal and can result in a point for the opposing team. This signal is used to alert all players to the fact that double contact has happened and should be reviewed. Volleyball Hand Signals With Explanationĭouble contact in volleyball hand signal is a signal that is used to indicate that two players have touched the ball on the same team. What Does It Mean When A Ref Holds Up Two Fingers In Volleyball?Ī two-finger signal indicates an angle defense, which means the player in front dives forward into the angle while their partner covers the backcourt if they miss the ball. More rows of arms and fingers should be drawn toward the floor. The forefinger should be held in a circular motion. Maintain a vertical flight of palms, raising both arms vertically. A crowd of eight fingers should spread out. Place the arm on the other side of the team as if it were their own. The officials use their hands to signal indoors, and they use them to move the hand to indicate the direction of the service. This signal is used by the first referee to determine who won the rally, and it is repeated by the second referee to determine who won the next round. The arm should be parallel to the floor with the hand open and the palm facing forward while parallel to the floor with the hand open. It is critical that the arm is straight out from the shoulder. The team is on the other side of the table, with a vertical hand/arm. When a team requests a time out, the second referee or first referee, whichever comes in first, whistles and places the palm of one hand over the other in a vertical position to form a T. By the end of this article, referees should have a better understanding of how to use hand signals to help make volleyball games run smoothly. We will also cover the importance of proper hand signals and look at ways to practice and become comfortable with them. In this article, we will discuss the various hand signals used by volleyball referees and provide tips for how to use them effectively. Knowing how to properly use hand signals when refereeing volleyball can help the flow of the game and prevent confusion and delays. Referees play a critical role in the game, and their hand signals help to ensure that the players understand the decisions being made on the court. They are doing the best they can and are trying to make the game enjoyable for all.Volleyball is a game of communication, and hand signals are an important part of this conversation. Just keep playing and listen to the refs regardless of whether you agree with the call or not. Getting angry, yelling at the ref, and throwing a fit does no good and will not help you or your team. Basketball is a difficult game to referee. Without officials the game would be no fun at all and they are doing the best they can. Keep in mind that the referees are there to make the game better. |
